Sex and Relationships Problems ~~The Effects of Enmeshment

-->
From “The Emotional Incest Syndrome” by Patricia Love with Jo Robinson.

NOTE: SENSITIVE SUBJECT MATTER concerning sexual problems that stem from enmeshment with a parent. Please make note of it. For mature readers only.

The Relationship Problems of the Chosen Child
(The child within a relationship of enmeshment with a parent.)

From pages 51 – 55:

(BUY THE BOOK if you find this relevant to you!
This is a gross condensing of the main points of the text!)

Fear of Commitment

“I do just fine with women right up to the point where the word 'commitment' is mentioned. Then I feel like turning and running away. The thought of living with just one woman for the rest of my life sends me into a cold sweat.”

Problems with love relationships are the rule rather than the exception for the adult Chosen Child, and one of the most common problems is a fear of intimacy and commitment. To a person who was bound up with an engulfing parent, any close relationship can feel like an invasion. I see this trait quite frequently in men who were the favorite sons of aggressive, domineering mothers.

Lack of Romantic Attraction

Woman: “I am married to a wonderful man. He goes out of his way to please me. I couldn't ask for anything more. Yet, I'm always dissatisfied. I keep wondering, 'Where's the magic? Isn't there more to love than this?'”

Man: “I've been married three times, and I'm about to sign up for number four. I've never found what I'm looking for in a woman. All my wives have disappointed me.

The normal parent-child bond is powerful in and of itself; when it is amplified by enmeshment, it becomes all-encompassing. Unwittingly, some Chosen Children go through life trying to recapture this intensity...

Fathers, Weddings and the Sexualization of Daughters in the Family Integrated Church

“My Daddy bought my
honeymoon nightgown,
so it's okay to be intimate
with my new husband.”

The following is a post from the "thatmom: real encouragement for real homeschooling moms" blog. It followed after a long discussion of enmeshment and inappropriate fixations on gender within the patriarchy movement. It is nearly all the way at the bottom of the thread entitled: The Great Divide: Patriocentrists on One Side, Thinking Women on the Other.

-->
The blog does not allow linking to specific comments, but at this time, this comment appears at the very end of the list of comments on this thread. I draw attention to it because it sounds very much like the passage that I quoted from Adams in the previous post discussing "Daddy's Little Girl."

Thanks to "Anne2" who was so kind to find this for me, pointing it out to me on the True Womanhood website. It is another example of "covert" or non-sexual but gender related incest between a father and daughter in the "Family Integrated Church" movement.

Anne wrote @ June 2, 2008 at 5:25 pm:

...About 15 years ago I was at a wedding with patrios leanings. I felt embarrassed when during the ceremony the father made a big deal about how his daughter was a virgin and blah, blah, blah. She was a blushing bride, for all the wrong reasons.

In the previous week the bride’s mother had pulled out some lingerie to show me, that the father gave the daughter. It had been purchased by the father and was a gift for the wedding night. I remember thinking, “How tacky is this?” The mother then said, “you know, it shows that her father, thinks this is ok, that she can have sex with her new husband.” I just got the willies and thought where the heck was this family’s sense of propriety?

I have the same assessment when viewing you tube videos of patriarch weddings and reading some of the vows some have taken, and their constant display of look at us doing this here biblical stuff.

It becomes a display of poor taste and bad manners with their incessant pushing of this new righteousness. Interestingly, in their desire to be seen as so biblical, they fall into appearing to have as bad as taste as the ungodly. At this same girl’s bridal shower, an unsaved woman gave her a teapot. The woman then shouted, “Open the pot, open the pot!” Upon which the bride-to-be pulled out a pair of lacy panties, another woman then reached for them and slingshot them through the air into the room full of besmirched and hysterical women.

Who is tackier?

And who says these guys have the market cornered on how to be a “biblical” family or “biblical” anything for that matter?

-->
Anne adds to this on True Womanhood after I inquired about whether anyone remembered where I could find the post:

I also want to add not only did the father of the bride go on and on about his daughter being a virgin and how the couple had never kissed, the pastor who took the wedding, also belaboured the point in his wedding charge. To date, it has been the most embarrassing public event I have ever witnessed. At the reception the bride’s parents got up in front of everyone and embarrassed her again when dad literally swept his wife off her feet bent over backwards kissing, while someone shouted, “Show ‘em how it’s done!” Poor girl.

Daddy's Little Girl: Covert Incest and Inappropriate Intimacy

Tears" photo by Crimfants on Flickr.com

From “Silently Seduced” by Kenneth Adams. Exploring the dynamics of covert (emotional or non-sexual but gender-related) incest.

From pages 50 – 52:

Rebecca had been her family's princess. On the outside, she seemed to have it all. She was indulged by her parents and seldom held accountable for any misbehavior. Rebecca frequently received special privileges and rarely wanted for anything. Her siblings hated her, and her friends were envious. It was difficult to imagine that a child treated as so special could have been so deeply injured. She was adored by her father. As she described the specialness her father felt toward her, the emotional damage she endured became clearer. Rebecca's father treated her more like his mistress than his daughter.

As Rebecca began to recount her father's relationship to her, the “ickiness” of this seduction became evident to her. Though she had never been sexually touched in an overt way by him, Rebecca squirmed in her seat as if to get her father off her. She grimaced and exclaimed,

My dad actually bought me sexy underwear. I can't believe it. I forgot all about that. I felt a little funny at the time, but he always said I was his “princess” and deserved the best. So I didn't think much more of it. Besides part of me liked being treated so special. When I started developing breasts, my dad would look at me with a big smile and proclaim, “You are becoming a woman.” At that point, he started taking me out shopping and buying whatever I wanted. I'd come out of the dressing room with my new clothes on to get his approval. That felt funny, too, but I didn't think much about it since I really loved being so special.
I've always been my dad's favorite. He paid lots of attention to me at home and wanted to know all about my day. I was adored by him and I knew it. I began to expect that from everyone in my life, especially men. He even talked about boys to me, telling me I should find a man who would love me like he did.
Even as an adult, he continues to adore me. I almost seem more special to him than my mother. Last week when I was at their house, my dad wanted to go into the family pool for a swim, just the two of us. It felt kind of icky, but he said that he just wanted some time alone with “his doll.” That night when I got back home, I binged on food. The next morning I starved myself and exercised until I pulled a muscle. Throughout my life, overeating has been an off-and-on pattern. Sometimes I used to vomit or take laxatives as a way not to become overweight. I've stopped that, but now I'm into compulsive exercising and dieting.

Rebecca's eating disorder was another consequence of the sexually charged relationship her father had with her. Although she suppressed the memory of her father's seduction, her body continued to carry the feelings and sensations of the trauma. Her eating disorder masked her body's attempt to bring to consciousness the awareness of the injury. The preoccupation with food and weight helped keep the the reality hidden. Compulsive overeating, binging and purging oneself (vomiting, exercising or laxatives) or starving oneself are eating disorder patterns common to victims of covert incest as well as overt incest.

[Blog host note: Self-injury is also very common, but was not when this book was written. Excessive numbers of body piercings and tatoos also can also be considered an presumptive factor in the presence of the signs of other emotional and/or clinical issues associated with incest (covert or overt). I was also taught while studying hypnotherapy that obesity and sex issues correlate very closely. Anyone seeking help with weight control should consider investigating sexual cause in hypnotherapy. Van der Kolk, a psychiatrist with expertise in trauma, brain imaging and pharmacology, teaches that “the body keeps score” and felt sense is a strong component of trauma and is felt by the body as well as remembered by the mind. The two are strongly intertwined. In a sense, if the mind ignores the trauma, the body still tries to heal itself through ineffectively playing out the trauma.]

The energy spent focused on food and weight leaves no room for the body to heal. As Rebecca began to validate her inner reality of being a covert incest victim, the compulsion to overeat slowly subsided. She also needed the support of Overeaters Anonymous to help her overcome her complusion.

It was crucial that Rebecca directly address both the compulsive eating pattern and the root cause of the compulsion. There is an unwritten rule expressed from time to time by members of Anonymous programs: Understanding the reason behind the addiction is not important. One is sometimes encouraged to use the support and philosophy of the Anonymous program and forget the “why.” Though there is some merit to this belief in the early part of recovery (stopping the compulsive behavior and making one's life more manageable), it actually is a hindrance to ongoing recovery (peace of mind, comfortableness with one's own body and self, and emotionally fulfilled and functional relationships with others). It has been my experience that those people who give in regularly to their addiction (be it food, sex or gambling) are the ones who remain in denial about the root injury that opened the way to the addiction in the first place.

The preoccupied relationship Rebecca's father bestowed upon her was motivated out of his needs, not hers. Rebecca was seduced into a sexualized, idealized relationship with her father, believing his special attention was all she needed. Simultaneously, she felt emotionally abandoned. Her legitimate needs for love, belonging and separateness were never met. Being adored and admired were her only clues to the mystery of what it would finally take to fill up the restless, empty space that lay in her soul.

Parenting Styles of Adults Enmeshed with Their Children: Raising Chosen Children

From ”The Emotional Incest Syndrome” by
Patricia Love with Jo Robinson.

-->
Dr. Love discussed the mixed messages that parents send to their children simultaneously, communicating love, abuse and neglect. Adults should never look to children to chronically satisfy needs that should only be met through intimate relationships (emotional or otherwise) with other adults. Children are not capable of the perspective that an adult should have, so they rely upon unrealistic fantasies, beliefs and expectations in order to survive childhood.

On page 13, the author says:

When a parent relies upon a child for emotional support, the results are not always sweetness and light... A parent who is overly attached to a child can also be critical or neglectful, which results in a confusing mixture of love and abuse. Instead of feeling privileged for being a Chosen Child, the boy or girl wonders, "Why me? Why not someone else?"

Varieties of Parenting Styles of Emotional Abuse:
  • Neglectful
  • Abusive/Critical
  • Sexualizing

-->
From pages 13 - 25:

The Neglectful Parent
For me, as for most people, the blindfold of childhood was removed layer by layer. The first piece of information to lodge in my consciousness was the fact that although my mother and father cared for me, they both had abdicated their roles as parents – my father by disappearing, my mother by consistently placing her needs above mine. This simple fact, which is now so blatantly obvious to me, was revealed only through therapy. Before that, it had been too painful a reality to absorb...
The revelations continued. With a therapist's help, I realized that my mother's praise and high regard for me was partly an unconscious device to relieve her of the burden of parenting...Later I discovered that my mother's effusive praise had another purpose, which was to bolster her fragile ego.

-->
The Abusive/Critical Parent
“I got the feeling my mother was trying to live her life through me, only I wasn't doing a good enough job...She used love like a club.”

-->
David, a successful architect in his mid-fifties, had a mercurial mother who doted on him one minute and attacked him the next. “She wanted me to be wither her all the time,” he told me, “but she was hypercritical. She made me feel like a failure. I was never good enough.”
Guilt is a potent weapon of the over involved parent. Any time the child's needs conflict with the parent's, the parent can lower the boom: “You only think of yourself.” “You're so selfish.” “Cant you think of anyone else?” The martyr role is equally effective. “Go ahead. Go out with your friends. I'll be all right. I'll be fine sitting here alone by myself. Don't worry about me!” Thus begins a lifelong association between love and guilt...

David's relationship with his mother can be broken down into tow separate roles: he was part surrogate spouse and part scapegoat. He was expected to satisfy his mother's need
for romantic attachment and absorb her tension and disappointment as well.

-->
The Sexualizing Parent
“He would show me off to his friends and brag about how beautiful I was. It was all very romantic.”

[Blog host summary of the case history of Marla (pages 21 – 25). Because this pattern is so strongly reflected in “Botkin Syndrome,” I will summarize the author and present sections of the case history in a separate and subsequent post.]
In the case history presented by the author, Marla was a “person of extremes” who was very successful professionally and is lovely but suffered great anguish as an adult due to an inability to establish stable and emotionally intimate relationship with men. Her self value spikes between very high and very low self-esteem which the author describes as a classic problem for those who are “chosen children.” The author describes the relationship between Marla's parents as good initially, but they then withdrew from one another. The mother turns to the son (“Derek”) for companionship while the father turns to Marla to fill the needs that should only have ever been sought from an adult.

-->
Marla was never allowed to explore or investigate her own natural talents or inclinations because she was required to do only what the father desired for her. She admits now, as an adult who has begun to accept the realities of the relationship, although she was well-treated, she describes her father as completely self-centered. She describes that she had to be only what her father wanted. Even as a young person, the only sign of problems was the same twenty pounds she would repeatedly gain and lose. She was lovely and accomplished, wearing her insecurities and the effects of the performance-based relationship that revolved around her father's needs in places where no onlookers could notice (both as an adult and as a teen). The relationship was one of bitter-sweet extremes, just like her internal sense of value (and lack thereof).

As an example of these types of sexualizing relationships, the author presents the father who doted on the daughter and was permissive while the mother was strict and distant. She was the beautiful daughter that the father paraded around like a showpiece, training her in tennis (his profession) and took her alone to compete in local tournaments where they would share a bed together during hotel stays. The daughter denies any sexual violation but her father would hold her in his arms during the night. (The father thus taught her inappropriate sexual boundaries of affection and created other boundaries to shield their relationship from competition from other male suitors as she became older.) She was such an icon of worship in this relationship which was irresistible for her where she was completely cared for by a sophisticated person who was totally devoted to her. She literally could do no wrong while bearing no responsibilities in their relationship (save to please her father). Both the daughter and the father lived in fantasy of the ideal. He became the triangulating factor in all of her adult relationships in addition to the distant relationship she held with her mother. This actually stunted her ability to form meaningful, intimate healthy relationships apart with everyone and anyone else.

-->
From page 23:
I had quite a few clients, both men and women, whose parents walked this fine line between emotional and sexual incest. Their parents didn't touch them inappropriately, but they displayed an unhealthy interest in their bodies. Some had parents who did not allow them privacy in the bedroom and bathroom. Others had parents who openly stared at their bodies, took seductive pictures of them, or made inappropriate sexual remarks. When parents are both sexually and emotionally fixated on their children, the enmeshment is usually more intense and more damaging (author footnotes “Favorite Fairy Tales” edited by Mulherin, Grosset and Dunlap, 1983).

When it came time to find a mate and bond appropriately, the author describes Marla's struggles of comparison to her father (something her relationship with her mother also suffered. Neither daughter nor father could find a suitable mate for her, and the restrictive relationship of fantasy did not prepare Marla with realistic standards for adult relationships. She also lacked the skills needed to function because she did not know how to the negotiate wants and needs of others in balance with her own. The ideal mate could only dote on her in an unhealthy way and required nothing from her, and no one but the father was capable of meeting her narcissistic relational needs in a romantic relationship. Everyone paled in comparison to her magnificent father of fantasy, and because of the magical perspective that a child tends to have for a parent (what the author calls “making a banquet of crumbs”), she never appreciated his faults in a realistic way. She'd “turned her heart to her father” in such a profound and an emotionally incestuous way, she could not give it to another as her own mate. To escape this fantasy, Marla went behind her father's back to date and to try to form meaningful relationships with men her own age, but she knew only how to function as an object. She became promiscuous as a result, a passive means of establishing independence apart from her father.

From page 24 -25:
Having a name for what happened to them and a conceptual framework for their childhood experiences makes a big difference in their lives. But for Marla and others like her who were deeply enmeshed with a parent, it can take years of therapy to repair the damage.

We will examine the quotes from Dr. Patricia Love's book that discuss Marla in a subsequent post as an example of the “Sexualizing Parent.”
